LSU Health New Orleans physicians and dentists make up a significant portion of both the Best Doctors 2017 and Top Dentists 2017 lists published by New Orleans Magazine. Of the physicians making the cut, 140 of them are LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine faculty. Of the dentists, 37 are LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry faculty. LSU Health New Orleans enjoys even greater representation through the hundreds of others on the lists who received their education and training at an LSU Health school.

One member of the LSU Health New Orleans faculty is on both lists. Hugo St. Hilaire, MD, DDS, FACS, Associate Professor of Surgery, is a practicing plastic & reconstructive surgeon as well as a craniofacial surgeon. With DDS and MD degrees, as well as craniofacial fellowship training at Johns Hopkins, Dr. St. Hilaire is the only person with his qualifications in the State of Louisiana. He is featured with one of his toughest cases in the Best Doctors, August 2017 issue of New Orleans Magazine.

The lists also include a chancellor, a vice chancellor and two dental deans. In addition to leading the state’s most comprehensive professional health university and LSU health system, Larry Hollier, MD, FACS, FACC, FRCS, LSU Health New Orleans Chancellor and LSU System Executive Vice President for Health Affairs, still practices as a vascular surgeon. Dr. Hollier recently returned from the Mayo Clinic’s annual event – Larry H. Hollier Visiting Professorship in Vascular Surgery– honoring him as the founder of the Mayo Clinic Division of Vascular Surgery. J. Christian Winters, MD, FACS, Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs, Chair of the Department of Urology and CEO of the LSU Healthcare Network, is a national expert in female urology and voiding dysfunction. He has played a leading role in developing national guidelines for treatment, core curriculum and outcomes measures. Emeritus Professor and Dean Eric Hovland, DDS, MEd, MBA, as well as current LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry Dean Henry Gremillion, DDS, MAGD, a nationally recognized expert in orofacial pain, also made the list, published in the June 2017 issue of New Orleans Magazine.

A third LSU Health New Orleans school is also represented. Benjamin Springgate, MD, MPH, whose excellence in internal medicine was recognized, holds faculty appointments in both the schools of medicine and public health.

New Orleans Magazine partners with Best Doctors, Inc.®, which, according to the company, surveys doctors nationwide asking them for an assessment of the clinical abilities of their peers. Best Doctors says the physicians on their list represent the top four percent of practicing physicians. For dentists, the magazine uses the topDentists™ database. TopDentists™ describes it as a list based upon detailed evaluations of dentists and dental specialists by their peers.

LSU Health New Orleans faculty practice in every major health facility in metropolitan New Orleans and beyond. They also treat patients in faculty practice clinics – the medical faculty at LSU Healthcare Network with multiple locations throughout the area, and the dental professionals at the Faculty Dental Practice at LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry. More information, including specialties, locations and appointment phone numbers, for the LSU Healthcare Network is available at LSUDOCS.com. “We have many outstanding clinicians who are leaders not only locally, but nationally,” notes Dr. Winters. “Across the state, the LSU Healthcare Network has more than 800 physicians covering nearly every available medical and surgical discipline from Lafayette, Baton Rouge, New Orleans and regions beyond. In addition to their clinical practices, most doctors are also researching new medical advances and teaching the next generation of physicians through LSU Health New Orleans Medical School, residency, internship and fellowship programs.”
